Sadly, we
lost Nikki on Monday, February 8th.
Steve and I adopted Nikki in 2000 from the Cocheco
Valley Humane Society, and she had a wonderful life,
always with "her people" at the shop, and enjoying
trips to the lake for a swim or ride on the boat,
and hiking and camping. She loved stuffed hedgehog
toys and had become quite adept at pulling the
squeakers out of them. Nikki was a wonderful guard
dog, always policing the perimeter of the grounds,
but she was very gentle and sweet, and adored
children.
One of the
most amazing things Nikki ever did was years ago, at
my stepdaughter Lea's birthday party in June....all
of the kids were playing in the pool when it started
to thunder and lightning; Nikki diligently "rounded
up" the kids from the pool and herded them into the
safety of the garage.
She didn't stop until every child was sheltered.
Nikki loved
to howl at the fire trucks' sirens as they went by,
which was fairly frequently at our place --- she
would toss her head back and howl long past the time
we humans could even hear them any longer. She loved
to get biscuits from Kathy, our mail carrier, and the many
customers that were always so kind to her.
I'd like to
thank Dr. Cindy Hoisington and everyone at The
Animal Health Center in Rochester for attending to
Nikki so efficiently in her time of need on that
horrible day. Thanks so much for rushing to make her
as comfortable as possible, and for all of the years
of excellent care that you gave her during her vet
visits and baths.
Nikki will
be unbelievably missed.
